ORISKANY FALLS — Volunteers from six local fire departments braved below freezing temperatures Wednesday afternoon to knock down a fire in a 4-story stone screening machine at the rock quarry on Route 12B, according to the Oriskany Falls Fire Department.

Fire Chief Russell Petrie said the alarm was raised at 2:35 p.m. for a fire on the fourth level of a large quarry machine that sorts and screens the stone. “Some of the machinery” was on fire, he said, along with some of the more flammable materials on the structure at the Heidelberg Materials Plant.

Crews from Oriskany Falls carried a hoseline up the four flights and “knocked it down with one handline” within a matter of minutes, Petrie stated. An aerial truck from the Clinton Fire Department then came in to finish off the flames.

“We’re still investigating” the cause of the fire, Petrie stated.

No one was injured. Chief Petrie said, other than it being cold, “We didn’t have anything freeze” or hamper the firefight.

The Oriskany Falls, Waterville, Deansboro, Clinton, Clayville and Madison fire departments responded.
