In 2023, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of straight saw blades for working metal, when their volume decreased by -25.4% to 251 tons. Over the period under review, total imports indicated tangible growth from 2013 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Imports peaked at 336 tons in 2022, and then reduced notably in the following year.
In value terms, straight saw blade imports declined to $7.9M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, total imports indicated resilient growth from 2013 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $8.5M in 2022, and then shrank in the following year.
In 2023, the United States (137 tons) constituted the largest straight saw blade supplier to Canada, accounting for a 55% share of total imports. Moreover, straight saw blade imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Switzerland (65 tons), twofold. China (20 tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.9% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United States stood at +3.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Switzerland (+12.0% per year) and China (-5.3% per year).
In value terms, the United States ($4.3M) constituted the largest supplier of straight saw blades for working metal to Canada, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Switzerland ($2M), with a 26% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with a 7.9% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the United States stood at +6.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Switzerland (+15.3% per year) and China (-2.5% per year).
In 2023, the straight saw blade price amounted to $31,446 per ton (CIF, Canada), jumping by 25% against the previous year. Over the period from 2013 to 2023, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.0%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Taiwan (Chinese) ($31,448 per ton) and the United States ($31,446 per ton), while the price for Germany ($31,443 per ton) and Brazil ($31,443 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (+3.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
